The natural wooden mask is a ritualistic element of Timorese culture, present in animistic cultural practices and ancestor worship. This mask, which today materializes in interior decoration as a rich form of wall art, has been present in the aboriginal culture of Timor since time immemorial.
Traditionally, handcrafted masks were carved from wood and adorned with engravings of graphic designs or figures of ancestors to be used in dances and important ceremonies, such as the commemoration of military victories and the homage to ancestors.
Contemporary Timorese artists, however, draw from this insular cultural heritage to create unique and more stylized pieces, aesthetically designed for wall decoration, that is, to unite the essence of Timorese art with the concepts of interior design.
