The Timorese wooden totem is a powerful symbol of spiritual and energetic protection . Made with natural wood and aged with patina painting, it features anthropomorphic figures, which refer to ancestry, together with geometric elements carved in rustic wood that allude to the protective forces that constitute the mystical universe of the island, such as the sea.
The wooden statue represents the spiritual link between people and their ancestral guides, however it can personify a family member who made the passage to another plane, where the details of the body denote their clothes and the rich textile art of East Timor .
