Nataraja is the representation of Shiva as a cosmic dancer, the king of dance who moves to the center of the wheel of fire (arc of flames symbol of the cycles of life of creation and destruction) while destroying obstacles for Brahma to create new possibilities.
The small marble figurine is fashioned with rich iconography from Hinduism and Indian cultural heritage - originally cast in bronze by artisans in India between the 9th and 10th centuries. Underneath the image of Shiva Nataraja with four arms, symbolizing the cardinal directions, sees is the dwarf Apasmara, symbol of ignorance which Shiva triumphs elevated under a lotus flower pedestal.
The hourglass drum (dumru) in one of his hands represents the vital principle of balance between male and female energy powers; the abhaya mudra encourages you not to be afraid of what needs to fall; snakes represent selfishness that must be fought; while her flowing hair symbolizes God Ganga, epitome of the river Ganges that removes ignorance.
